It is no surprise that Vale was the favorite vacation destination of past President Gerald Ford and his wife Betty. Indeed, Betty Ford earned the reputation of the natives as the "First Lady of the Vail Valley" thanks to their commitment to promoting the prosperity of this mountain community. In recognition of her kindness, the Vail Alpine Garden Foundation has established this wonderful botanical garden bearing her name. Guests to the garden have the opportunity to admire breathtaking sights of the Rocky Mountains as they stroll through beautiful flowerbeds, creeks and cascades.

Guests from recent years have admired the gardens, which are complemented by well-kept plants, breathtaking mountain looks and interactive educational facilities for kids. A few guests cautioned that those susceptible to mountain sickness may experience some signs and symptoms here, as the garden is 8,250 feet higher than sea level, which makes it the tallest botanical park in America. Plenty of water to drink (which you can buy at the garden store) will make it easier for you to cope with the consequences.

Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is located near the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater at the base of Mount Vale. The garden is available 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset. Admission to the garden is free, but you may wish to collect some money for the gift store. Public and private visits are available from June to August on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10:30 am from the training center. There is a $5 fee. In winter, snowshoe hikes are also available along the Winterwood Trail that leads to the gardens. Snowshoes are offered for kids and grownups alike; the fee is $5. You can even enjoy a self-guided walk on snowshoes during the educational center's opening hours: From Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 you can find out more information about the gardens and check the calendar of activities on the official website.
