As we all know, the state parks along theCape Arago Beach Loop are great, but if you can’t miss one, it’s Shore Acres State Park, known as the “South Coast Gem.” This is a beautiful garden.
Shore Acres sits on a sandstone cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and features a lush garden with plants and flowers from around the world. “This is probably the most beautiful state park in Oregon,” wrote Terry Richardson of Oregon. “Well, the term may be suspicious, but to me the garden is the most spectacular man-made object in the national park system.”
Flowers bloom in every season. Visitors to the Oregon coast will find unique flowers, shrubs and evergreen trees (the largest in Monterey Oregon) in this well-preserved “Four Seasons Garden”, which I love to find (including pines) . There are amazing dahlias in the fall, hundreds of azaleas and azaleas in early spring, thousands of daffodils and tulips from late spring to summer, and more than 800 roses in the summer.
In the fall, volunteers installed more than 300,000 Christmas lights (mostly LEDs) to create a dazzling Pacific-themed show. Thousands of people have visited the acre coast to witness the annual “Acre Holiday Lights” (November 23 to December 31, 2017). Dedicated Friends of Shore Acres volunteers make Shore Acres seasonal gardens possible.
