history In 1920, Hugh Landon (Hugh Landon) and his second wife Jesse Walker Landon (Jesse Walker Landon) began developing the Old Fields landscape and gardens. The garden they visited in Maine was truly impressive and Landons hired the Olmsted brothers to work with Gallagher to improve the land. This is Gallagher’s vision to transform the “old field” into a complete American country manor, firmly anchoring the house to the landscape, providing magnificent views and comfortable garden paths. Gallagher’s work for Old Fields includes tree-lined allies in front of the house, redesign of the estate entrance and formal gardens.
Canyon Garden spans the hill between the Indianapolis Water Company’s home and central canal and is one of Gallagher’s most important contributions to the Alderfield landscape. The free guided tour of the IMA Gardens takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from April to September at 1:00 pm.
