Description

In addition to the significant contributions of the Middletons, Middleton Place’s historical preservation activities and historical interpretation also focused on the African and African American slaves who lived and worked here. These stories are also a microcosm of American history. From the beginning of the colonial era to the revolution, the first republics and civil wars, they have left their mark on the land, colonies, states and countries.

The “Beyond the Field” tour introduces slavery and the lives of African slaves and African Americans (including slaves and free men) who work on southern plantations such as Middleton Place. Explore their personal lives, family lives, beliefs, leisure activities, and the extraordinary cultural contributions they and their descendants have made to modern America, and are still striving for it. Their story tells of the power of the human spirit.
