Description

Educational programs are also provided in forests, trails and public botanical gardens with a variety of flora and fauna.

Kalmia Gardens are located on a 19th century plantation in the Peedy District of South Carolina. This is a 35-acre public botanical garden open to the public and is a historic building. Coker College’s Kalmia Gardens have been open to the public since 1935 and are home to many exotic indoor plants planted by Ms David Robert Coker, the garden’s founder.

There is a 60-foot drop from the Hart House and Formal Garden to the Black Creek floodplain. Paths and walkways lead you through laurel bushes, holly and pine plateaus, and beech cliffs. This unusual topography has resulted in a variety of Kalmia-specific plants and animals. The contrast between the formal villa and the garden and the cypress swamp creates a unique enjoyment.
