Description

The Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center covers an area of 687 acres and was once called Merchston Farm. From 1911 to 1959 it was the hometown of William and Martha Brooks Hutchison. The 100 acres of land in Zhuxi was donated by Ms. Hutchison’s daughter. Ms. Hutchison was one of the first female landscape architect in the United States. She participated in the hemp workshop alongside famous female garden designers such as Marion Coffin and Beatrix Farand. Her interest lied in the use of native plants and in the role of gardening clubs in developing civil gardening activities, which later became the field of gardening therapy.

In addition to the formal area, there are many paths along the fields and along Bamboo Brook. It is surrounded by mild meadows and forest areas. It is home to all kinds of birds, butterflies and animals.

Enjoy the fall foliage while hiking and viewing the wildlife. The Morris County Park Commission offers seasonal programs at this facility.
