Not for nothing the stunning botanical building of the Balboa Park is decorated with countless columns. Built with laths to ensure the correct flow of sun light and air for herbs, this floating building with laths was built for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915-16 and is one of the largest in the world, perfectly framed by a pond with lilies in flower frames.
But this spectacular building, situated on the El Prado pedestrian road, next to the Timken Museum of Art, is something more than just a beautiful face. Go to the jungle (no entrance required) for a walk under the fern of tall trees, as well as for an exhibition of exotic orchids and similar bright flowers in floral technique.
But you would also like to go for a walk, of course, and explore the numerous beautiful gardens of Balboa.
If you are seeking a more global experience, visit the Alcázar Pink Garden (designed after the Alcázar Castle in Seville, Spain), where well-kept flower beds and box hedges can be found at mosaic turquoise fountains.
Kids will enjoy the kindergartens of the world “Ethnobotany”, in which almost every plant is eatable. Discover organic herbs, fruit trees and vegetables.
Internal consultation: you can enter the botanical building for free, but don’t forget to schedule your attendance: it is open every day of the week from 10 am to 4 pm, except Thursdays.
